Radiation protection adviser (RPA)Salary, qualifications, licensing and career path, 2026 edition
A radiation protection adviser holds an appointment the law requires: employers working with ionising radiation, radioactive substances, or radiation generators must formally consult a certificated radiation protection adviser, and the RPA is that person. The role combines radiological expertise with statutory advisory responsibility, covering everything from designating controlled areas and radiation emergency preparedness to advising on compliance with the Ionising Radiations Regulations 2017 and environmental permitting regulations. It carries a personal certification that has to be earned and periodically renewed, ensuring the adviser provides advice on safe systems and legal requirements in radiation protection.
Radiation protection advisers earn a median of around $138,000 in the United States equivalent market and roughly £78,000–£100,000 for an established RPA in the UK, rising to £140,000 in consultancy practice. The certification is what lifts this above the general health physics and radiation protection advisor range.
This role has a genuine formal gate, unusually for this site. In the UK an RPA certificate of competence from a recognised assessing body, certified by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), is required, and employers must appoint a certificated radiation protection adviser in writing to ensure regulatory compliance.

Six versions of the same job title
"RPA" changes with what you advise on: a decommissioning estate with constantly changing hazards, a fuel-cycle plant with continuous contamination risk, or a portfolio of smaller clients as a consultant. Note the top segment: decommissioning creates the most demanding advisory environment. Meter = relative hiring volume across TRX's 2026 desk activity.
Decommissioning & dismantling
Advising on decommissioning operations: new hazards as facilities are opened, controlled area designation for changing work fronts, and compliance advice for operations without precedent. Sellafield, Magnox fleet, Dounreay.
Fuel handling & fuel cycle
RPA appointments at fuel-cycle facilities, where contamination risk is continuous, processes are chemically complex and radiological protection interfaces with criticality safety. Sellafield, Urenco, Orano.
Operating fleet
RPA appointments at operating stations: advising on outage work, dose management arrangements, controlled area designation and compliance with the radiation protection framework. EDF UK fleet, global operators.
Radioactive waste management
Advising waste facilities on handling, packaging, storage and transport, including the radiological aspects of waste acceptance and consignment.
Nuclear medicine
RPA appointments in hospitals and medical facilities, a substantial market in its own right covering imaging, therapy and isotope handling.
Large new build
Advising during construction and commissioning, as radiological areas are established and the plant transitions from a construction site to a licensed operating facility. Hinkley Point C, Sizewell C.

| Occupation | Median | P10 | P90 | What moves the number |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Radiation protection adviser (RPA) | $138,000 | $95,000 | $215,000 | Certification, multi-site scope, consultancy practice, complex facilities |
| Physicists (all industries) | $155,680 | $80,000 | $230,000+ | The physicist code spans research and technology, so it exceeds this median |
| Health physicist | $126,000 | $84,000 | $198,000 | The broader profession without the statutory appointment |
| Nuclear safety engineer | $134,000 | $89,000 | $212,000 | Reactor safety rather than radiological protection |
Sources: US BLS OEWS May 2025 for the coded occupations; TRX market analysis Q3 2026 for the specialism ranges. The RPA appointment carries a clear premium over general health physics, because certification is a genuine barrier and appointed advisers are legally required. Note the regimes differ: the UK RPA is a statutory appointment, while the US operates a Radiation Safety Officer model, so figures are not directly equivalent.
Multi-site or multi-client appointments
Advisers covering several facilities or a consultancy client portfolio carry broader scope and command more.
Complex facility scope
Fuel-cycle plants and decommissioning facilities generate the hardest advisory questions and the highest demand for experienced advisers.
Consultancy practice
Independent and consultancy RPAs, particularly those who can win and hold client relationships, reach the top of the range.
Three ways in, and only one of them starts with a nuclear degree
The RPA route is unusually well defined for this site, because the certification specifies what is required. It is reached through health physics practice, and there is no shortcut.

Are you actually ready to compete for an RPA appointment?
Everything above tells you what the market pays and what it asks for. It does not tell you how your CV reads against the other advisers applying for the same appointment, and in a field where certification and appointment history decide offers, that is the part that costs candidates the job.

The credentials that actually gate the work
This is one of the few genuinely certificated roles on this site. The RPA certificate is a real barrier, which is precisely why the appointment carries a premium.
| Credential | Jurisdiction | Required for | Time | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| RPA certificate of competence | UK | Being appointed as an RPA | Years to qualify | A genuine formal requirement assessed by a recognised body. |
| Written appointment by employer | UK | Acting as an RPA | — | Employers must appoint a certificated adviser in writing. |
| Practical RP experience | UK / US | Certification and credibility | 5+ yrs | Demonstrated experience is part of the assessment. |
| ABHP certification | United States | US professional recognition | Exam + experience | The recognised US credential. |
| RSO appointment | United States | Acting under a US licence | Licence-specific | The nearest US analogue to the RPA appointment. |
| Certificate renewal | UK | Continuing to practise | Periodic | Certification is time-limited and must be renewed. |
| Unescorted access authorisation | United States | Site attendance | 4–10 wk | 10 CFR 73 background check. |
| BPSS / SC clearance | UK | Site access | 2–20 wk | SC is common on licensed sites. |
The UK RPA regime and the US RSO model are different statutory frameworks, and certification does not transfer between them. Confirm requirements for the specific jurisdiction.

The certification limits supply, which sustains the premium.
Because the RPA appointment requires a certificate that takes years of practice to obtain, the pool of available advisers is structurally constrained while demand comes from every employer working with radiation, including hospitals, universities and industry outside nuclear. That combination keeps RPA rates firm and makes consultancy practice, serving many clients from one certificate, an attractive and well-paid model.
Why certificated advisers are scarce.
The certification cannot be accelerated, requires demonstrated practical experience, and must be renewed, so the supply of new RPAs is limited by how many health physicists are progressing through the pipeline. With decommissioning expanding, the medical market growing and experienced advisers retiring, certificated RPAs remain among the more consistently sought radiological professionals.
Adjacent and onward roles
The RPA appointment sits within radiological protection and connects to safety and compliance functions. These are the moves TRX sees most often.
Questions we get asked every week
How much does a radiation protection adviser earn in 2026?
In the UK, established RPAs earn £78,000–£100,000, rising to £140,000 in principal or consultancy practice. In the US equivalent market the median is around $138,000, with senior advisers past $215,000. Consultancy RPAs bill £650–£880 a day, and £800–£1,100 for multi-client and complex facility work outside IR35. The certification and core competence in radiation protection supervisor roles are what lift this above the general health physics range.
Do you need a certificate to work as an RPA?
Yes, and this is one of the few genuinely certificated roles covered on this site. In the UK an RPA certificate of competence from a recognised assessing body, typically the RPA 2000 body, is required, and employers must appoint a certificated adviser in writing. The certificate is time-limited and must be renewed. The US operates a different model based on Radiation Safety Officer appointments under a licence.
Can you become an RPA without a radiological protection background?
No. The certification requires demonstrated practical experience in radiological protection, including areas such as diagnostic radiology and industrial radiography, so the route runs through health physics practice. Typically that means five or more years working as a health physicist or RP specialist before seeking certification. Medical physicists convert well, and the medical RPA market is substantial, though nuclear appointments need industrial experience and knowledge of nuclear decommissioning.
Is being an RPA a good career in 2026?
It is one of the better-protected positions in radiological protection, because the certification constrains supply while demand comes from every employer working with radiation, including a large market outside nuclear in hospitals, universities and industry. The honest caveat: the certification takes years to obtain, must be maintained, and the role requires giving advice that is sometimes unwelcome to the people paying for it. The role also involves developing contingency plans and implementing engineering controls to manage exposure risks.
What is the difference between an RPA and a health physicist?
A health physicist practises the profession: dose assessment, shielding, monitoring, contamination control and ALARA work. A radiation protection adviser holds a certificated statutory appointment, formally appointed by an employer to advise on compliance with radiation protection legislation, covering matters such as prior risk assessments, controlled area designation, and radioactive waste adviser responsibilities. Put simply, health physics is the profession and RPA is a legal appointment within it. Most RPAs are experienced health physicists, but the certificate is a distinct qualification, and holding it changes both what you are permitted to do and what you are paid.
Which RPA skills are most in demand in 2026?
Complex facility experience leads, particularly fuel cycle, nuclear decommissioning and decommissioning, where advisory questions are hardest. Close behind is multi-site or multi-client capability and transport expertise, since the transport regime frequently sits alongside RPA duties. Certification, regulatory knowledge and prior risk assessment are the near-universal hard filters. Additionally, skills in providing guidance and training to employees and managing company-wide radiation protection programs are highly valued.
