Primavera P6 plannerSalary, qualifications, career path and hiring demand, 2026 edition

A Primavera P6 planner builds, maintains and analyses the logic-driven schedules used to control nuclear projects. The work covers WBS development, activity networks, calendars, constraints, baselines, progress updates, resource/cost loading, critical-path analysis, float, schedule recovery and integration with cost, risk and change. The role is software-specific: a nuclear planner may use several planning tools, but a P6 planner is hired because they can turn scope and execution strategy into a credible Primavera schedule that survives technical, commercial and management challenge.

In short

Westinghouse is advertising a dedicated P6 Scheduler at $55–$60/hr in September 2026 and a P6 Primavera Administrator at $103,200–$129,000. In the UK, current P6 planning roles in complex infrastructure are around £62,000–£72,000, with senior planners reaching £85,000–£90,000. TRX therefore models experienced nuclear P6 planners around $98,000–$128,000 in the US and £55,000–£72,000 in the UK.

The software alone does not gate the role. Employers want credible schedule logic, proper WBS and coding, clean baselines, measurable progress rules, realistic calendars, constraint discipline, critical-path analysis and an ability to challenge project teams when the sequence is not buildable. AACE PSP, PMI-SP, APM PPC or EVM credentials help, but several years of clean P6 scheduling on complex projects matters more.

a composite day for an experienced Primavera P6 planner supporting a major nuclear construction package within an integrated project-controls team.

Office and site interface · typical daySchedule analysis with critical-path discipline
08:00
Schedule health reviewRun checks on open ends, constraints, negative float, excessive durations, out-of-sequence progress, calendar use and logic changes before accepting the latest update.
09:00
Progress integrationIncorporate verified engineering, procurement and site progress, applying agreed data dates, actual starts/finishes, remaining durations and physical-percent-complete rules.
10:30
Critical-path analysisTrace the current longest path and near-critical paths, compare them with the prior period and identify which interface or delayed activity is actually moving the completion date.
12:00
Planning meetingChallenge package managers and engineers on sequence, access, resources and dependencies, then convert agreed actions into logic changes rather than unsupported target dates.
13:30
Change-impact modellingInsert an approved or potential change into a copy of the schedule, test its impact on milestones and float, and separate genuine delay from pre-existing critical-path pressure.
15:00
Recovery / mitigation optionsModel resequencing, parallel work, resource changes or alternative access strategies and show the delivery team what schedule benefit each intervention really creates.
16:30
Reporting and narrativeProduce milestone forecasts, critical-path commentary, variance analysis, schedule metrics and a clear explanation of what changed, why it matters and which decisions are required.
Caveat callout — a neat Gantt chart can still be a bad schedule. P6 will calculate whatever logic, calendars and constraints it is given. Strong planners inspect whether that model reflects how the work will actually be executed. The real skill is not pressing F9; it is knowing when a critical path is credible, when float is artificial and when the schedule has been manipulated to hide delay.

Before you apply

Are you actually ready to compete for a Primavera P6 planner role?

A strong planning CV shows schedule ownership, not just software access. Recruiters want project value, schedule level, activity count, WBS, baseline responsibility, update cycle, critical-path analysis, progress rules, EVM integration, contractor interfaces and examples where your schedule analysis changed a delivery decision. “Proficient in Primavera P6” is weak without evidence of what you actually planned.

Qualifications & clearance

The credentials that actually gate the work

Primavera planning is competence-gated rather than licensed; employers assess tool depth, schedule theory, project delivery experience and site access.

A P6 certificate proves exposure to the tool; it does not prove that someone can build a robust schedule. Employers still test logic, float, constraints, progress methodology and critical-path judgement in interviews. On major nuclear programmes they will also look for evidence that the planner can work inside formal governance: baseline approval, change control, schedule data dates, coding standards, configuration of milestones and reconciliation between contractor submissions and the integrated master schedule. That discipline is what makes schedule information auditable and commercially defensible.

Skills screened

What appears on a 2026 Primavera P6 planner shortlist

The shortlist is looking for planners who can create a model of delivery that is logically sound, field-realistic and useful for decisions—not just visually tidy.

Hard filters

Named on the specification

  • Primavera P6 schedule development — EPS/WBS awareness, activities, relationships, calendars, codes, milestones, baselines and update cycles.
  • Critical Path Method analysis — longest path, near-critical paths, float interpretation, driving logic and milestone sensitivity.
  • Schedule quality / health checks — open ends, excessive lags, constraints, out-of-sequence progress, high float and unrealistic durations.
  • Progress measurement and forecasting — actuals, remaining duration, physical progress rules, data dates, forecast dates and variance analysis.
  • Change and recovery modelling — impact schedules, resequencing, mitigation options, recovery programmes and logic-controlled scenario analysis.
  • Project-controls integration — resource/cost loading, EVM, risk, cost, change and reporting interfaces around the schedule.
Differentiators

What decides between two shortlisted candidates

  • Large integrated nuclear schedules — direct experience linking engineering, procurement, construction, commissioning and licensing milestones.
  • Level 4 construction / commissioning planning — detailed executable schedules rather than only summary reporting.
  • Schedule risk analysis — quantitative schedule risk using tools such as Safran Risk, Primavera Risk Analysis or equivalent.
  • Claims / forensic planning — time-impact analysis, delay attribution, entitlement and contractor-programme challenge.
  • P6 administration / data governance — EPPM structures, global data, user controls, coding standards or Oracle/SQL knowledge.
  • Automation / analytics — Power BI, Excel Power Query, scripting or schedule-data pipelines that improve reporting without corrupting source control.
Underweighted aside — constraints can hide poor planning. Interviewers often give candidates a schedule with dozens of mandatory dates and ask what is wrong. Strong planners explain that hard constraints can manufacture float, suppress the real critical path and turn a logical network into a list of imposed dates. The right response is to preserve contractual milestones but use relationships and realistic execution logic wherever possible.

Read the market this way — P6 remains infrastructure, not a niche tool.

NRS has an enterprise P6 EPPM licence, Great British Energy – Nuclear procured P6 EPPM Cloud Service, Westinghouse is hiring dedicated schedulers, and Sizewell C is actively recruiting senior planners while construction scales.

The pattern is consistent: as nuclear programmes become larger and more contractually complex, P6 capability becomes part of the project-control operating system rather than an optional software skill.

The scarcity — planners who understand delivery, not just Primavera.

Many people can update dates in P6. Fewer can challenge a construction sequence, identify a false critical path, defend progress rules, understand EVM consequences and explain how a change really affects completion.

Nuclear employers pay for that judgement because weak schedules create bad management decisions long before they create bad reports. The strongest planners are also comfortable walking the workface, comparing claimed progress with physical reality and feeding that challenge back into the schedule without turning planning into adversarial reporting.

Questions

Questions we get asked every week

How much does a nuclear Primavera P6 planner earn in 2026?

Westinghouse is advertising a P6 Scheduler at $55–$60/hr in September 2026 and a US P6 Primavera Administrator at $103,200–$129,000. TRX models experienced nuclear P6 planners around $98,000–$128,000 and senior leads around $125,000–$160,000. In the UK, experienced planners model around £55,000–£72,000, with senior/lead roles around £72,000–£92,000. These roles are crucial for managing complex infrastructure projects and enhancing schedule management efficiency.

Do you need an Oracle Primavera P6 certification?

No. Westinghouse lists Primavera P6 certification as preferred rather than mandatory, alongside PMI-SP and AACE PSP. Employers care more about whether you can build and analyse detailed project schedules, maintain baselines, forecast completion, and explain critical-path movement. Certification is useful when experience is similar between candidates. The ideal candidate is responsible for quality assurance and collaboration with project management teams and stakeholders.

What is the difference between a P6 planner and a nuclear planner / scheduler?

A P6 planner is defined by strong Primavera schedule-building and analysis capability, often working as a construction scheduler within project controls teams. A nuclear planner/scheduler is the broader profession and may use P6, Microsoft Project, outage tools, or other planning systems depending on the project. On major nuclear projects, the roles overlap heavily, but “P6 planner” usually signals that hands-on Primavera proficiency is a hard filter. The role requires expertise in coordinating with project leadership and ensuring safety and efficiency.

How much P6 experience do employers usually want?

Current Westinghouse scheduler roles ask for around five years of project-scheduling experience and advanced P6 proficiency, while other complex-project scheduler roles commonly ask for four or more years of direct P6 use. Junior roles exist, but independent nuclear planning usually requires enough experience to understand schedule theory, project controls, and challenge technical teams rather than only enter updates. A bachelor's degree or relevant industrial experience is often part of the job description.

Is demand strong for P6 planners in nuclear in 2026?

Yes. Sizewell C is recruiting senior planners as construction ramps up, NRS operates Primavera P6 across its decommissioning portfolio, Great British Energy – Nuclear has procured P6 EPPM Cloud Service, and Westinghouse has multiple live scheduling/project-controls roles. Demand spans new build, decommissioning, outages, FEED, and advanced-reactor development. Project managers and project controls schedulers are actively seeking candidates with Primavera P6 skills to monitor progress and enhance project success.

What P6 skill makes a planner stand out most?

Critical-path judgement. Employers expect basic software mechanics; the differentiator is being able to explain what genuinely drives completion, why it changed, whether float is real, and which mitigation will actually work. Schedule health, change-impact analysis, EVM integration, and contractor challenge are especially valuable supporting skills. Innovative solutions and establishing oversight in schedule management are key to success.

Nuclear only

We only recruit in nuclear. That is the whole point.

TRX can assess whether your experience fits P6 planning, integrated scheduling, outage planning, project controls, earned value or forensic delay work. Send the schedule size, level, update cycle, baseline responsibility and critical-path decisions you have actually owned; those details show whether you are a true planner or mainly a P6 user.
